How to Score IELTS 8 for Australian Visa - Tips from Successful Applicants

An IELTS 8.0 in each band earns you 20 migration points - the maximum for English. That can be the difference between getting invited or not. Here is how to get there.

Why IELTS 8 matters

The points calculator shows that English is the single highest-impact category:

• Competent (IELTS 6.0): 0 points
• Proficient (IELTS 7.0): 10 points
• Superior (IELTS 8.0): 20 points

The jump from Proficient to Superior adds 10 points. For many applicants, this is the difference between a competitive score and falling short.

Section-by-section tips

Listening (target: 8.0)

• Practice with varied accents (British, Australian, American)
• Read questions before each section starts
• Spelling counts - common words must be spelled correctly
• Practice with Cambridge IELTS books 14-18 (closest to real test difficulty)

Reading (target: 8.0)

• Time management is everything - 20 minutes per passage
• Read the questions first, then scan the passage for answers
• Do not spend too long on one question - move on and come back
• Practice skimming and scanning techniques daily

Writing (target: 8.0)

• Task 2 is worth double Task 1 - spend 40 minutes on it
• Use varied sentence structures and vocabulary (but be accurate)
• Answer the question fully - many people miss part of the prompt
• Practice writing under timed conditions at least twice a week

Speaking (target: 8.0)

• Speak naturally - do not recite memorised answers
• Extend your responses with reasons and examples
• Use idiomatic language where it fits naturally
• Record yourself and listen back to identify pronunciation issues

How long to prepare

Most people who already score 7.0 can reach 8.0 with 4-8 weeks of focused preparation. If you are starting from 6.0-6.5, allow 3-6 months.
