VETASSESS is the largest skills assessment authority in Australia, assessing over 237 occupations. If your occupation is not assessed by a specialist body, it is probably assessed by VETASSESS.

Who uses VETASSESS?

VETASSESS assesses general professional, managerial, and some technical occupations. Examples include:

  • Construction Project Manager (133111)
  • Marketing Specialist (225113)
  • Economist (224311)
  • Environmental Manager (139912)
  • Architect (through AACA for some pathways)

The assessment criteria

VETASSESS evaluates two things:

1. Qualifications

Your qualification must be at the required level for your occupation. Most professional occupations require at least a bachelor degree in a relevant field. VETASSESS compares your qualification against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

2. Employment

You must have at least one year of relevant post-qualification employment in the nominated occupation within the last five years. Employment must be at the appropriate skill level.

The application process

  1. Identify your ANZSCO code and check VETASSESS requirements
  2. Gather certified copies of qualifications and employment references
  3. Submit your application online through the VETASSESS portal
  4. Pay the assessment fee ($630-$880)
  5. VETASSESS reviews your application (8-12 weeks)
  6. Receive your outcome letter

Tips for success

  • Employment references must clearly describe duties that match the ANZSCO description
  • If your qualification is from an unusual institution, include as much detail as possible about the program
  • Priority processing is available for an additional fee (approximately 4 weeks)

Check if your occupation is assessed by VETASSESS using the occupation checker.
