The most common employer-sponsored pathway to permanent residency is the 482 to 186 transition. Here is how it works.

The Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream

To apply for the 186 visa through the TRT stream, you need:

  1. Hold a 482 visa for at least 2 years (or 3 years for some occupations)
  2. Same employer - You must have worked for your nominating employer for 2-3 years
  3. Positive skills assessment (if required for your occupation)
  4. English language - Competent level (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent)
  5. Under 45 years old (some exemptions apply)

Timeline

  • 482 visa grant: Month 0
  • Work for same employer: 2-3 years
  • Apply for 186 TRT: Month 24-36
  • 186 processing: 6-12 months
  • PR grant: approximately Month 30-48

Key advantages

  • Lower English requirement than the 189/190 (Competent vs Proficient)
  • No points test - You do not need to score 65+ points
  • Employer handles most of the process - They sponsor you and nominate the position
  • Family included - Your partner and dependent children are covered

Key risks

  • Employer dependency - If your employer goes bust or terminates you, your pathway is disrupted
  • Occupation must remain on the list - If your occupation is removed from the relevant list, the TRT stream may not be available
  • Same employer requirement - You cannot easily change jobs during the qualifying period

Tips for success

  • Build a strong relationship with your employer early
  • Keep all employment records and payslips
  • Start your 186 application as soon as you are eligible
  • Have a backup plan - consider building a points profile for the 189 or 190 in parallel
