Moving to Sydney - What to Know Before You Arrive

Practical guide for skilled migrants moving to Sydney - where to live, work, and what to expect from the harbour city.

Sydney is Australia’s largest city and economic capital. Here is what you need to know as a skilled migrant.

Where to live

CBD and inner city ($600-$1000/week)

Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Pyrmont, Ultimo. Walking to work, expensive, small apartments.

Eastern suburbs ($500-$800/week)

Bondi, Coogee, Randwick, Maroubra. Beach lifestyle, vibrant, well-connected.

Inner west ($450-$650/week)

Marrickville, Newtown, Ashfield, Burwood. Diverse, great food, good transport.

Northern beaches ($500-$700/week)

Manly, Dee Why, Freshwater. Beach lifestyle, ferry commute, feels like a coastal town.

Western Sydney ($350-$500/week)

Parramatta, Liverpool, Blacktown. The most affordable option, growing job market, diverse communities.

The job market

Sydney dominates in:

  • Financial services (CBD, North Sydney)
  • Technology (CBD, Pyrmont, North Sydney)
  • Professional services (CBD)
  • Healthcare (major hospitals across metro)
  • Construction (massive infrastructure projects)

Transport

Opal card covers trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. Expect $160-$200/month for commuting. Sydney traffic is notoriously bad - public transport is generally faster for CBD commutes.

The cost reality

Sydney is expensive. A couple renting a 2-bedroom apartment and living comfortably should budget $6,000-$8,000/month. Salaries are higher to compensate, but the gap is not always enough.

Tips for new arrivals

  1. Consider western Sydney for affordability while you establish yourself
  2. Join migrant community groups on Facebook for practical advice
  3. Start your job search before arriving - many companies interview remotely
  4. The Opal card caps at $50/week for most commuters

Check NSW state nomination or browse migration agents in NSW for visa support.
