Moving to Melbourne - A Migrant's Guide

Practical guide for skilled migrants moving to Melbourne - neighbourhoods, jobs, transport, cost of living, and settling in.

Scenic Australian landscape.

Melbourne was my home for years. Here is what you need to know as a new migrant.

Where to live

Inner city ($500-$800/week)

Fitzroy, Carlton, Collingwood, South Yarra, Richmond. Walking distance to the CBD, vibrant nightlife, expensive.

Middle suburbs ($400-$600/week)

Brunswick, Northcote, Hawthorn, Caulfield, Box Hill. Good public transport, diverse communities, more space.

Outer suburbs ($300-$450/week)

Werribee, Craigieburn, Dandenong, Frankston. Affordable, family-friendly, car-dependent.

Getting around

Melbourne’s tram network is the largest in the world. The free tram zone covers the CBD. A Myki card covers trams, trains, and buses - about $150-$200/month for commuting.

Finding work

Melbourne’s job market is strong for:

  • IT and software (CBD, inner north, Docklands)
  • Education (universities and schools across the city)
  • Healthcare (major hospitals across metro area)
  • Professional services (CBD)
  • Manufacturing (western suburbs)

The migrant community

Melbourne is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. You will find established communities from virtually every country, with community organisations, cultural events, and ethnic food from around the globe.

Weather

Be prepared for four seasons in one day. Melbourne’s weather is genuinely unpredictable. Layer clothing and always carry a light jacket.

First steps after arriving

  1. Get a Tax File Number (TFN) from the ATO
  2. Open a bank account (you can start online before arriving)
  3. Get a Myki transport card
  4. Register for Medicare if eligible
  5. Start your job search through Seek, LinkedIn, and Indeed

Check Victoria state nomination if you are still deciding on your visa pathway, or find a migration agent in Victoria.
