Tips.
- Medical assessment is complex and pathway-dependent. Consult the Medical Board website for the specific requirements for your specialty and country of qualification.
- English requirements are strict - IELTS Academic 7.0 in each band (or equivalent). There is no exemption for native English speakers from some countries, though OET is accepted.

Frequently asked questions.
Do I need to pass the AMC exam?
It depends on your pathway. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) on the standard pathway generally need to pass AMC examinations. Those from competent authority countries or with specialist qualifications may have a different assessment pathway.
Can I practise medicine while waiting for full registration?
Limited registration may be available in some circumstances, particularly for area-of-need positions in rural and remote areas. This allows supervised practice while you complete full registration requirements.
How long does the full medical assessment process take?
The migration skills assessment itself takes 12-26 weeks. However, the full pathway to practising as a doctor in Australia (including exams, supervised practice, and full registration) can take 1-3 years depending on your specialty and pathway.
