Engineers Australia assesses all engineering occupations for Australian skilled migration. The assessment is based on either a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) or direct recognition of accredited qualifications through international agreements like the Washington Accord.

Assessment process.

  1. 1 Determine if your degree is recognised under the Washington, Sydney, or Dublin Accord.
  2. 2 If recognised: apply through the Direct Pathway with your qualification evidence.
  3. 3 If not recognised: prepare a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) with three career episodes and a summary statement.
  4. 4 Submit your application through the Engineers Australia migration skills assessment portal.
  5. 5 EA reviews your application - CDR applications undergo plagiarism checking.
  6. 6 Receive your assessment outcome indicating your assessed engineering category.

Required documents.

  • Certified copies of engineering degree and transcripts
  • Three career episodes (1000-2500 words each) for CDR pathway
  • Summary statement mapping competencies to EA requirements
  • Passport bio page and CV
  • English language test results

Tips.

  • Check the Washington Accord list first - if your university is accredited, you avoid writing a CDR entirely. This saves months of preparation time.
  • Each career episode should describe a specific engineering project. Focus on YOUR personal contribution, not the team's achievements. Use first person.
  • Do not copy from online CDR samples - EA uses sophisticated plagiarism detection. Plagiarised CDRs are automatically rejected and may result in a ban.

Frequently asked questions.

What is a CDR and do I need one?

A Competency Demonstration Report is required if your engineering degree is not accredited under an international agreement. It consists of three career episodes (1000-2500 words each) describing your engineering work, plus a summary statement mapping your competencies.

What engineering categories does EA assess?

EA assesses four categories: Professional Engineer (4-year degree), Engineering Technologist (3-year degree), Engineering Associate (2-year diploma), and Engineering Manager. Your category affects which ANZSCO codes you can be assessed for.

How long is the EA assessment valid?

EA skills assessments do not expire, but immigration authorities may have their own validity requirements. It is recommended to use your assessment within 3 years.
